"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."

Remember that there is no greater gift than love - - - including the love of reading.

Reader's Oath

I promise to read
Each day and each night.
I know it's the key
To growing up right.

I'll read to myself,
I'll read to a crowd.
It makes no difference
If silent or loud.

I'll read at my desk,
At home and at school,
On my bean bag or bed,
By the fire or pool.

Each book that I read
Puts smarts in my head,
'Cause brains grow more thoughts
The more they are fed.

So I take this oath
To make reading my way
Of feeding my brain
What it needs every day.

The Edison Park Media Center provides information in a multitude of formats for students and teachers, in support of the elementary curriculum.  We encourage a love of reading, through personal attention and the Accelerated Reader program.  We strive to develop life-long information seeking skills in an environment conducive to learning.

Guided Independent Reading (AR) is reading practice and it accelerates reading growth for all students, regardless of reading ability.  Teachers and students focus primarily on the average percent correct scored on AR Reading Practice Quizzes.  The higher the average percent correct, the higher the reading gains!  Increased reading practice time leads to greater reading growth when the reading practice is carefully guided.  This is true for students of all ability levels in all grades.

The Media Center is open from 7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.  Students may check out 3 books for a two-week period (kindergarteners check out 1 book at a time).  Parents may obtain their own library number and are encouraged to use the Media Center.

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers."
